Review: The Female of the Species

Everyone: Read. This. Book.

I just finished reading this. It just feels like I was just punched - as if something was trying to wake me up slowly with gentle tugs, but because I didn't wake up it decided to use its knuckles and go straight where it hurts. My chest.

The Female Of The Species is a must read. Honestly, I'm glad someone wrote something like this and this author did such an excellent job. It speaks of the realities of rape culture (among other related things.) It points out ever so subtle the gray areas of such issue in our society. It's a blunt knife slowly making a wound in your brain. This book will make you pause, think, maybe give you goosebumps, and push you to the limits to figure out 'what would you do if... (?) '

My rating is based on how awesome the author used its characters in order to execute this story oh so flawlessly. It's not poetic. It's not terribly violent. It's not full of high school drama. It's just honestly written without flourishes.

Book review aside... I wish there was more conversation about this issue in schools and colleges - speaking openly about it instead of sneaking around it like it was a taboo. It's the 21st century!

So, that being said... This is a reminder to everyone: Speak up! That's the only way to stop this behavior. Look for help . I understand that it may not be easy, but it's important. We're here to help and support each other.
